These new music artists are deemed superstars and game-changers and there are several awards from various media houses dedicated to honoring these artistes In this article, we would be highlighting the best newcomers/ newbies of 2020.
Best New Music Artists Of 2020
Born Akanbi Bamidele Brett, Cheque got signed to Penthauze Records in February 2019 and his music is from diverse genres of both local and international artistes. The singer started the year with “Satisfied”.
Produced by Masterkraft, the single ‘Satisfied’ sees Cheque in his glorious form as a versatile musician. He waxes lyrical about deserving satisfaction from the opposite gender, using his smooth delivery and catchy flow to great effect. His delivery on the Swaps-mixed tune showed unforgettable cadence, right until he brings the track to the perfect crescendo.
He then followed it with one of the biggest songs of 2020; “Zoom”. The trap based track saw him shade his haters and for him, congratulations is the only valid conversation you can have with him. In a bid to officially announce his presence in the Nigerian music scene, he released a dope EP that helped his ranking and rating as a new artiste.
The Razor EP is a 5 track body of work with no feature (guest artiste) and you know what happened next? Nigerians totally loved his body of work as many music critics hailed him for bringing something fresh and exciting to the table. The track “Zoom” then saw a Remix with Nigerian – American rapper, Wale and Davido.
The dynamic duo which makes up Ajebo Hustlers have been making music for quite a while now but their tune “Barawo” brought them to the limelight. On the 1da Banton produced hit single which is off their forthcoming project “Timeless,” the singers address the issue of jungle justice in Nigeria.
It talks about the extrajudicial killings in Africa and came just in time when the country was plagued with war and strife due to the #EndSARS movements. DMW act, Davido hopped on the Remix and we all know how OBO gives a magical touch to already banging hits.
Zanku act, Jamopyper came in the music scene stealthily like a thief in the night and within a short period, he has proved to be consistent. After getting signed to one of the most sought after street label in the country at the moment, he made his debut on Zlatan’s hit song “Unripe Pawpaw“ and gave this same vibe that fans swoon over on another street hit song “Of Lala” released for Rahman Jago alongside Zlatan.
Moving forward, he made a huge contribution to the buzzing Zlatan joint “Shomo” off Zlatan’s “Road To CDK” EP, and at the end, he crowned it with one of the biggest songs of 2020, “If No Be You” which features DMW act, Mayorkun.
Born Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, Mohbad is one of the fat rising singers changing the narrative of street songs. Signed alongside three other artistes to Naira Marley’s record label, Marlian records, the singer sprung into action to live up to his name “Moh Bad” which means “I am Bad.”
Within a period of one year, the singer released a couple of hits that would immediately get you on your dancing shoes. “Ponmo” which features Naira Marley and Lil Kesh, “Koma Jensun” which features Naira Marley. “Sorry” and of course his feature on the trending tune, “Ko Por Ke” owned by ace producer, Rexxie.
The Marlian singer then hit the industry all over again with his debut body of work titled “Light EP”, an effervescence sustained from his first major-label offering “roaring under bubbling on top.” The 8-track body of work is a showcase of the long-missing balance between the grassroots music scene and the mainstream dominated pop music.
Due to these features, the body of work is now one of the best offerings by a new artiste in recent years, comparing classics. Mohbad made sure to feature his boss, Naira Marley, Davido, and YAGI boss, Lil Kesh.
In an industry dominated by major players like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, and others, some artistes have found a way to blow up. Olakira which literally translates to “shining star” in Swahili has been making music for a couple of years and in 2020 he took the Nigerian music industry by storm.
After the successful release of his debut body of work “Wakanda Jollof,” he brought forth the smash hit “In My Maserati” in June and this has taken him from having regional acclaim to being an international success in a year that has been rough for most The track received a Maserati Remix which featured DMW boss, Davido.
In-house music fans would know Zinoleesky during days of Firi Yahoo, always doing and dropping covers online alongside his bestie Lil Frosh but the talented singer got famous in 2020 under Naira Marley’s watch. In 2o2o Zino debuted with the song ‘Caro’ featuring Naira Marley but his second release of 2020 ‘Ma Pariwo’ brought him to the limelight.
Zinoleesky received Spotlight mid 2020 with the hit song ‘Ma Pariwo’ which is still in the head and on the lips of many. After the success of this song, Zino dropped another banger titled “Kilofeshe”, finally the new act, Show Killer shut down 2020 and recorded a Huge Success.
Bad Boy Timz
Bad Boy Tim aka Young Fela is another very good bad guy that has been making hits and due to his consistency, his track “MJ” instantly became a hit without a music video at the time of its release. On “MJ” eponymous of the “King of Pop,” Timz layers affection, braggadocio, and chirpy vibes for dance hot-steppers.
It’s a high energy Afrobeats song that blends well with the world loved Micheal Jackson pop style. The highly addictive tune topped charts for weeks and is still on high demand at clubs and parties. With the rave gathered Timz made two remixes for the single, one with Mayorkun and the other with Teni. He went on to feature on the buzzing Amapiano tune ”Loading” off Olamide’s “Carpe Diem” album. The newcomer turned charting artiste, released another afrobeat tune “Have Fun“ which has a lovely beat and super catchy lyrics.
