The Super Eagles are already depleted ahead of the game against Blue Sharks, but there could be more problems for them
Nigeria’s Super Eagles could be with just 19 players for the game against Cape Verde on Tuesday after two players tested positive for coronavirus.
Nigeria’s coach Gernot Rohr confirmed to the media ahead of the game that Tyronne Ebuehi and Samuel Kalu tested positive for Covid-19 before their trip to Cape Verde, although they will undergo another test tomorrow morning.
It’s a huge blow for the three-time African champions, who are already without eight players for the clash against the Blue Sharks.
The Super Eagles started their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Liberia last Friday, but they will be without some of the key players from that game for the match against Cape Verde.
Nigeria won’t be able to count on the services of the UK players, who have returned to their base due to the UK’s coronavirus restrictions.
Also, Ola Aina has been excused due to family reasons. It leaves Rohr with just 21 players to choose from, although the number could reduce to 19 with Ebuehi and Kalu set to miss the game.
Ebuehi was expected to replace Aina in the right-back position, but with his positive coronavirus test, Abdullahi Shehu is now set to come in for him.
