The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has cautioned against mistaking face shields for face masks, saying the former cannot guarantee protection against the Covid-19 pandemic.
The national disease control agency issued the warning during the weekend amid the spike in the case of coronavirus over the last three weeks.
NCDC said there is no confirmation on the effectiveness of face shields in preventing Covid-19 when used alone in non-healthcare settings, Daily Trust reports.
NCDC has warned against replacing face masks with face shields as Nigeria now surged into the community transmission stage of Covid-19.
It also emphasized that the disease can spread from person to another through respiratory droplets often through speaking, coughing, or sneezing.
NCDC added that face shields should not be used alone because there is no evidence from public health authorities backing its effectiveness.
“There is evidence that the correct use of face masks reduces the risk of COVID- 19 infection,” NCDC stated.
“Given the limited evidence on the effectiveness of face shields in protecting people from COVID-19 infection in community settings, and the absence of recommendations on their use, by the WHO and other public health authorities, face shields alone should not be used in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 infection.”
Nigeria presently has 24,567 confirmed Covid-19 cases, 9,007 recoveries and 565 deaths as the virus continues to take a swipe at the country.
