There were a couple of Nigerian players in action over the weekend, and here’s a round-up of how all they all fared for their clubs
It all starts from Africa, former Nigeria youth International. Junior Ajayi was in action for Al Ahly. The Nigeria International played 45 minutes for the African Champions as they were welcomed by El-Entag-El-Harby.
Ajayi was ineffective from the right, so he has to be taken off at half-time, but the match ended 3-2 in favour of Al Ahly.
David Okereke was involved in Club Brugge’s opening game of the season against Eupen. The 23-year-old couldn’t do enough to help his side to a win in a game in which they were favourites.
Jupiler League title holders Club Brugge were forced to a 2-2 draw. Okereke was replaced by Daniel Perez in the 71st minute.
Junior Pius played for just 28 minutes of the first half as his side St. Truiden beat Gent 2-1. On his return from an injury layoff, the 25-year-old suffered another injury that could see him sidelined for a few weeks.
Peter Olayinka was not on parade in Slavia Prague’s League season opener. The 25-year-old was omitted due to injury concerns. But his side pushed for a 1-0 away at Fastav Zlin.
However, another Nigerian just arrived in the Czech Republic, Ubong Ekpai, was on duty for the Czech side. He played 60 minutes, after which he was subbed off.
Al Hassan Ibrahim was on the losing end as his Nacional side were beaten 2-1 by Estoril in the League Cup. The former Austria Vienna man saw over 90 minutes of action, but it was just not his day as Estoril scored on the stroke of 89 minutes to take the win.
CSKA Moscow star Chidera Ejuke came on as a 66th-minute substitute for Fedor Chalov in his side’s curtain-raiser for the new season.
The 23-year-old will look to play a significant role for his Moscow side this season after five league goals and two assists last season.
Former U-17 star Akinkunmi Amoo was subbed off at halftime in Hammarby’s 2-1 home triumph against Norrkoping. Amoo has been one of the consistent players for his Swedish side this season.
