Spilling water for luck could be a folk custom in Bulgaria, Serbia, Turkey, and other nearby countries per folk belief, spilling water behind the one that goes on a journey, or to do an employment, will bring good luck, and is completed so the travel or the task will end happily.
They also practice it when visiting the school, on an exam, for an employment interview, going into the military. When one leaves home for a key event in their life just like the first day of faculty, a decisive exam, or a crucial competition.
It’s a custom to spill a copper vessel of water before the doorstep, in order that literally “it [your success] may persist water for you”. And when a bride leaves home before the marriage, she kicks a copper vessel filled with water too!
Typically, this tradition is followed up by giving the person a cranesbill plant, a Bulgarian symbol of health and prosperity. There seems to be a whole ceremony for ensuring success! before a student leaves for varsity on the morning of the 15th, one amongst the members of the family usually the mother should pour a bucket of water before the doorstep.
This presumably assures that throughout the approaching academic year studying will flow „as easy as water“ for the kid. The headteacher of one teacher usually repeats the ritual ahead of the college door. Just before the scholars enter the building for his or her first classes.
